Even though this meme doesn't apply to me because I didn't comment on the right amount of blogs until recently, I thought some of you in our media studies class might be able to relate or get a kick out of this..

Flaws of Group Projects
1)
One thing I *usually* hate in school is group project. I don’t mind
working with people at all, prefer it actually, but when the group gets judged
as a group rather than individual efforts is what grinds my gears. People put
different amounts of efforts into projects and should judged upon that. I’m
pretty sure everyone has been in a group where at least one person slacks off
and someone else has to pick up their work so it doesn’t affect their mark.
This is what gets me going but I think I’m being hypocritical as I’m probably
guilty of doing this myself. I know most people would do this if they where
getting an individual assessment, but being assessed as a group gives them the
opportunity to give someone else in the group more work. Then there’s people
that really couldn’t care less about their mark regardless if it’s individual
marking or not and just screw around the whole time to their groups expense.
The people that actually get the work done need to pick up the other member’s
jobs and that just sucks. Sometimes they have to do the workload of a 3 or 4
person project pretty much by themselves just to have the people that didn’t do
jack get the same mark as them. This can develop bad habits in people when
working with others in later years when it’s something more serious than a high
school project.

What If?
If the was no cable networking, the media we get would mostly be very
bias. Individuals would be running what we take in that might have a strong
opinion on something and try to sway us the way they want us to think. For
instance, someone could personally be running a newspaper and a story about a
25 year old charged with murder could be one of the topics. If the person
running the newspaper thought that the man is innocent, he could write the
article about how the it was self-defense and how he had to do it so save his
own life and portray him in a good light to try and sway the public into
thinking he is innocent. In contrary, if he thought that the man was guilty, he
could say how brutally he killed the victim and how the victim was a single mom
with 9 kids and was working 5 jobs to support them. The news could become
completely opinion rather than fact. I know there are some cable network that
seem to father one side over the other (such as some news stations that lean
towards conservative or liberal during elections), but the media would be
completely left or right wing towards news if there was no cable networking.
The media would get out of control without cable network so I’m thankful that we have it.

Impact of Media on Reality
The media has a huge impact on people's perception of reality. There are so many different types of media from tv to twitter to facebook to magazines that are filling the minds of what reality should be.
Reality tv shows are making youth believe that the world is something that it is not. They are showcasing usually scripted scenarios to capture an audience, but that audience takes that as fact and believes that's how it is. Expectations for later life is usually installed into children's brains at a young age. Disney movies have a tendacy to leave kids thinking that everything has a happy ending and that every princess will magically find his princess and all that jazz when in reality it's not all that easy.
Modern day society lives of the media. Technology has come so far in the last decade and now news can be spread all around the world in a matter of seconds with the click of a mouse. Something that happens in the States, such as a school shooting, can quickly be spread online and affect the lives and emotions of people all over the world. Also, news stations own the media they relase therefore allowing them to bend the story all they want when showcasing it.
Media has really taken control of the thoughts and expectations of others in the last few years and will continue to do so more and more as the years go by and technology advances.

House Hippo
The house hippo commercial is a good example of how easily the media can sway people's mind into believing anything they see. The commerical has realistic qualtities on how a "house hippo" would actually live and is very believable that one actually exists until the end. The professional video qualtiy also adds to this.
When kids see this commercial, most of them are convinced that they are actually real. I actually believed that the house hippo was real for many years until I actually listened to the ending and thought about what the girl was saying. Since she actaully didn't say "The house hippo is not a real creature, we are just showing you how easily you believe media", some people have a hard time reading between the lines to what the commerical is actually saying. Being a kid, by the time she starts talking I'm already daydreaming of having my own house hippo instead of listening.
Using professional video, audio, and making a story that sounds like it could be true, the "House Hippo" is a great example on how easily the media can sway veiwers into believeing something. It is very effective in doing so and shows that people should pay attention to what they are taking in and analyze it before taking it as fact.
